How to boot xp over network.?
I’m trying to load XP onto a machine with a failed DVD ROM. Have tried using different ROM and have been told that some convertor on the board is gone and my machine will never read discs anymore. This is not an issue except for the fact that I cannot load XP now. The BIOS supports usb and network boot. have tried the usb route and failed. How do I boot over a network.

What is the purpose of having 2 network cards?
My computer came with 2. I get disconnected or booted off my network and all the other computers on the network seem to work fine. I’ve worked out that it may be because I have 2 network cards. I don’t remember ordering 2 so it might have just come with the system.
What do I do with 2? Should I just disable one or should I bridge them?
I’m a network engineer with 30 years of experience.
The simple thing for you to do is to simply disable one of them and just use one. using two or more is really an advanced thing to do but I’ll give you the basics.
**** 2 or more Network cards. *****
With two or more network cards, you can load ballance your traffic, so you in effect can have double the bandwidth of using just one, but this requires routing configurations, and OS configuration changes.
As someone else said, you can also use one as a LAN port and the other as a WAN port, effectivly using your computer as a proxy server on a network. your cable modem / DSL modem would connect to your wan port, then your computer to your internal local area network (LAN port). All other computers would then be using yours as a proxy server, or it could be configured as a router, DNS server, DHCP server, etc. etc. There are many things you can do in that configuration.
You can also use two NICs as a type of firewall. Remember that a firewall is a philosophy, not a product. Firewalls can be utilized by getting hardware , software, utilizing policies or best practices. In this case, you may have two LAN’s you connect to, and to keep them apart from each other you may be using TCP/IP on one NIC and be using IPX traffic on the other, exclusivly. As long as your machine is not forwarding traffic, you would have a basic firewall between the two, but still be able to access both of them.
I hope that helps
WDTV Live Networking vs Ext3-Boot
Comparing the network navigation of the WDTV v1 running ext3-Boot vs the new WDTV2 (Live).
Notice the WDTV Live doesn’t catch all four of my network shares, it leaves off “usenet” for some reason. Additionally there are a lot more button-presses required to get to the same place compared to ext3-boot.

Linux on Slim Playstation 2
[updated]!
PlayStation 2 slim console booting Linux. This is done with MegaMan’s kernel loader and deba5er’s BlackRhino Linux distribution.
On slim consoles the kernel will NOT work with Linux installed on USB, it will crash and freeze all the time. Mouse / keyboard work, mass storage does not.
You need to have the Linux distribution stored on a network share (I have a NSLU2 NAS). Also network boot is quicker than the USB 1.1 ports on the PS2.
I am using kloader and the linux kernel from
http://kernelloader.sourceforge.net/linux.html
The initrd and distribution from “windows share boot files” at:

DVD from original PS2 Linux kit is needed to get sound working.

How do I boot from a network?
I just bought a wireless router and I have two computers. the one has Vista, and I want to make it so that I can boot Vista on the non-vista machine via network. How do I do that?
You can’t. you need a server with bootp facility, you then need to build a boot image compatible with the pc’s hardware. This is not the same as the OS loaded on your other machine. In any case if you did all this, the first time you loaded it it would go to Microsoft for an activation key and they would turn your activation off.
,`\ 100% Puppy Linux /`, Sub-128 MB Linux Distro
Demonstration of Puppy Linux Dingo 4.0
Specs on the machines:
Thinkpad 600X (P3-533 with ~512MB)
Dynex Wireless PCMCIA card
Thinkpad 760EL (P-133 with 64MB)
no USB, serial/parallel ports,
BIOS does not support booting from CDROM drive.
I demonstrate wireless connectivity and playback of a music video from youtube with the 600X.. Puppy Linux instantly recognized my card, and found my router, hooking up to router was very easy.
On the second machine, I just demonstrate a graphics program, as I wasn’t able to connect to the Internet, nor anything else of significance. I have a zip drive somewhere, and could have used that, but if I was desperate, maybe I could get it to work.
The program used to boot the 760EL, since it’s bios doesn’t support booting from anything other than floppies (which I didn’t have a drive for), and Hard drives, note it does support booting from a network (a feature that isn’t popular these days).. But I had to look around for a program that would permit me to boot from a cdrom, the program I found is:
Smart Boot Manager
Google it.. Or go here:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/btmgr/
You can use Smart Boot Manager to boot any operating system, even windows install disks.. So its a good thing to have especially if you have an old BIOS.

BOOTED FROM COMCAST
I’m actually submitting something that happened to me a few months back with my old ISP called Comcast. I was booted off of their network because apparently Comcast has a bandwidth cap but refused to devulge what it was exactly. I use my webcam a lot to communicate with friends and family and have downloaded software and free music from the net.

Among which of the cable should I use to network 2 computers using a router?
Here is the list of the cables, I don’t know which should I be using?
Cat 5e Patch Cables, Network Cables, Cat 5e 350 Mhz Patch Cable, Network Cables (NO BOOTS), Cat. 5e Universal Boot Patch Cables, Network Cables. What are differences between No boots and boot cables, universal and non universal ones?
Boots are rubber devices that protect the clip of the rj45 head from breaking off.
Universal??: Marketing is great these days.
The things you need to look for is cat5e 350 Mhz.
Patch cables and network cables are the same thing, some people use them interchangeably, but when someone(mainly a tech) says patch cables they are talking about connecting end devices to the wall plate or connecting horizontal links from the patch panel to the switch.
Also note how long it is. You would not want to buy a 20 ft network cable if the devices you are trying to connect are 50 ft apart.
im havn a prblm updting cod5 as well as i kep getting kicked frm the ps3 network?
its starts the update but then a error occurs and the network keeps booting me does anyone have an idea why?
Well, unfortunately this is a common issue that has plagued a many of us ps3 owners. It pretty much has become a typical occurance. I had it happen to me more times than I can count; matter of fact I just had it happen, not too long ago, when I tried to update folding/life w/ playstation. Sometimes it just depends on what time of the day you’re trying to do stuff like that, at peak network times it can be a b****–at other times, less so.
The only thing I can tell you is to keep at it and keeping trying until you get it downloaded (that’s what I had to do, took over several tries but I got it updated).
